Fine Arts Education and Community Engagement in Detroit’s Martin Park District
Since 2017, Duke Studios Detroit has been a fine arts instruction and production workspace located in the Martin Park District of Detroit. The studio includes a private learning, teaching, and production area that provides fine arts classes to students aspiring to become proficient in the arts. Our outreach model features a six- to eight-week curriculum focusing on visual arts classes for K-8 students and a portfolio development course for grades 9-12. Once students complete the course, they enter an apprenticeship program to work alongside local artists, creating community art installations by commission.
Our Story
Using a network of fine arts instructors, the studio identifies qualified and motivated students who demonstrate a strong desire to participate in our programming. After five years of successful partnerships and methodology, we recognized the need to expand our impact within neighboring communities beyond a tuition-based fine arts curriculum. Thus, Duke Studios Detroit Center for the Arts was founded as a 501(c)(3). This non-profit entity allows students and community members to explore fine and performing arts courses without the burden of high tuition and supply fees.

Mission
Duke Studios Detroit Center for the Arts believes in creating a strong network of students and community members who desire to explore the fine and performing arts. We understand that fostering an ecosystem that develops talent and supports their individual contributions to society is invaluable. Providing a professional environment for artists to learn, practice, and exhibit their collaborative experiences is what drives us. Members of our community feel empowered to activate spaces through collaborative team-building opportunities, resulting in installations and exhibitions that inspire a sense of unity. Our model cultivates mutual respect within the spaces where we live, learn, work, and play.
Vision & Value
We aim to nurture novice artists by providing resources and instruction, exposing them to creative exploratory courses and career possibilities. Fine and performing artists, curators, and neighborhood organizations now have a space to exhibit and organize. Public art enhances the collective energy of communities. When people collaborate toward a shared goal of creating, their bond fosters connections that lead to better spaces in which to live, work, and play. Strengthening your unique community through artistic interactions—in public and communal areas—is an essential ingredient for building a strong network..
